Oh Holy Night

Tonight I drove the kids around to look at Christmas lights. This is the cheapest entertainment and they LOVE it. They were bathed, in their snugly PJ's with some chocolate milk. On the radio played some of my MOST favorite Christmas music. (Check it out: Sufjan Stevens=awesomeness)

**disclaimer--I am not responsible for finding any good music...my music loving husband is THEE best DJ there is. He finds all types of great music!**

Anyhow, one of my favorite songs came on. I sang it very loudly. My children became quiet. I'd like to think that they were captivated by these stunningly beautiful lyrics, but really I think they were in awe of their tone deaf mom belting out a song.

The lyrics of this song are just incredible. Check them out:

O holy night, the stars are brightly shining;
It is the night of the dear Savior's birth!
Long lay the world in sin and error pining,
Till He appeared and the soul felt its worth.
A thrill of hope, the weary soul rejoices,
For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn.

Fall on your knees, O hear the angel voices!
O night divine, O night when Christ was born!
O night, O holy night, O night divine!

Led by the light of faith serenely beaming,
With glowing hearts by His cradle we stand.
So led by light of a star sweetly gleaming,
Here came the wise men from Orient land.
The King of kings lay thus in lowly manger,
In all our trials born to be our friend!

Fall on your knees, O hear the angel voices!
O night divine, O night when Christ was born!
O night, O holy night, O night divine!

Truly He taught us to love one another;
His law is love and His Gospel is peace.
Chains shall He break for the slave is our brother
And in His Name all oppression shall cease.
Sweet hymns of joy in grateful chorus raise we,
Let all within us praise His holy Name!

Fall on your knees, O hear the angel voices!
O night divine, O night when Christ was born!
O night, O holy night, O night divine!

I love the Christmas story. My favorite part of the story is when the multitudes of angles appeared before the shepherds. As I drove, I looked up at the dark sky. I tried to imagine what it would have looked like. A still dark night and then the sky filled with ANGELS VOICES!!!! Can you even imagine???? Incredible. I also LOVE how the whole shepherd/angel thing went down....check it out: (Luke 2:8-14)

And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. 9An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. 10But the angel said to them, "Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. 11Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christa]">[a] the Lord. 12This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.
Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying,
14"Glory to God in the highest,
and on earth peace to men on whom his favor rests."

I appreciate the emotional honesty of the Word of God. I love how the people in these pivotal stories are very real. The shepherds were TERRIFIED! I would be afraid too if an angel of the Lord appeared before me. I can relate. And how touching that the angel's first line of business was to comforted them. Isn't that just like God. Always telling his people to "fear not." I love that. I love that because I happen to be a person who really struggles with fear. Praise God that He is ALWAYS comforting his children.

  1. I love your thoughts. I swear music is the quickest way to the soul, especially when the music is about God. Glad you had a wonderful night!Love you!

  2. This is my all time favorite Christmas song. I belt it out too when I hear it. My heart is so moved by this song especially when they sing "Fall on your knees, O hear the angel voices! It gives me goose bumps every time.
Like Becca said "music is the quickest way to the soul".
    Love you
